On Independence Day

I was helping my colleagues put up decorations in the office in Whitefield-Bangalore on the eve of Independence Day (Indian), when the sight of our national flag inspired me to write this poem. This incidentally was my first patriotic poem!

Today’s the day we are painted anew,
In a saffron white and greenish hue.

Caste and creed and other distinctions fade,
Today we’re united by a single shade.

Today, all around a million flags flutter,
In the breeze a prayer they utter.

Peace and prosperity may our nation attain,
Suzerainty of nations may our nation obtain.
